Jeremy Bates is not treating his rookie quarterback with kid gloves.

No coddling. No easing into things.

The New York Jets offensive coordinator has Sam Darnold on the fast track Frank Ragnow Youth Jersey , and the No. 3 overall pick from Southern California is handling things like a seasoned veteran.

"We threw the whole playbook at him," Bates said Wednesday. "Just like the same with Josh (McCown) and Teddy (Bridgewater). If you treat them like a rookie, they'll become a rookie. We threw the whole book at him and see what he can handle 鈥?what he needs to work on, just like the other two.

"He has done a really good job."

Darnold is competing with both McCown and Bridgewater for the starting quarterback job, and will be given every opportunity this summer to win it.

McCown is the incumbent who's coming off a career year with the Jets, and is a respected leader. But he'll be 39 on July 4 and clearly isn't the future of the franchise.

Meanwhile, Bridgewater is on a one-year deal with New York after seeing his promising career nearly come to an end two years ago because of a serious knee injury while with Minnesota. He's still in the midst of a comeback, and will still only be 26 in November.

But Darnold has already had some bright moments this offseason, so if he continues to show the progress that made him so coveted by the Jets during the draft 鈥?the future could be right now.

"The question was, are we giving him bits and pieces of the offense or are we throwing everything at him?" Bates said. "We're throwing everything at him. If he can handle it, if he can prove that he is a starter then that would take place when the time comes."

Bates made it clear that it would be coach Todd Bowles' call on the starter, at quarterback and every other position on the field.

But Bates knows a few things about quarterbacks, having played the position in college at Tennessee and Rice. He has also been a quarterbacks coach in the NFL at several spots, including twice with the Jets and stops in Tampa Bay, Denver and Chicago.

And, so far Authentic Ryan Switzer Jersey , he likes what he sees in Darnold.

"Since rookie camp, he hasn't flinched," Bates said. "Everything that we have thrown at him, he's been able to handle, so we're excited."

The 41-year-old Bates was promoted by Bowles in February to replace the fired John Morton as offensive coordinator. He'll continue to serve as New York's quarterbacks coach, but this marks the first time since 2010 that he's running the entire offense.

Bates followed Pete Carroll from USC to Seattle, but was fired as offensive coordinator after just one season with the Seahawks. After a year out of the NFL, Bates was hired by Lovie Smith in Chicago as the Bears' quarterbacks coach. When Smith was fired at the end of the 2012 season, Bates was one of several assistants not retained by new coach Marc Trestman.

Bates used that time to do some soul searching and hit the road 鈥?literally. He spent five months hiking the 3,000-mile Continental Divide Trail, which includes mountainous terrain in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. He has said it made him a better person, and hopes his previous experience 鈥?and failures 鈥?with Seattle will help him thrive in this opportunity with the Jets.

"I did take a little sabbatical," Bates said. "Any time you get fired Billy Price Jersey Bengals , you can look at it one or two ways. You can either not think about it and try to become a better person and a better coach or you can just move on. I obviously took a lot of time by myself and thought about some things and I look forward to seeing how they turn out."

All eyes are obviously on the quarterbacks with the Jets. But, Bates has plenty of work to do with the rest of the offense, too.

Isaiah Crowell was added to the running backs group, which includes Bilal Powell, Thomas Rawls and Elijah McGuire and has a chance to be a playmaking bunch in the backfield.

Robby Anderson, Jermaine Kearse and Quincy Enunwa lead a receiving corps that isn't flashy but could be one of the most hotly contested positions in training camp, especially if Terrelle Pryor is healthy from arthroscopic ankle surgery and youngsters Chad Hansen and ArDarius Stewart progress in their second seasons.

There's no clear-cut starter at tight end, with Eric Tomlinson, Jordan Leggett, Neal Sterling, Clive Walford, Bucky Hodges and rookie Chris Herndon all vying for spots.

"Right now, I don't have a crystal ball, so we're still trying to figure out what we do best," Bates said. "We're throwing the whole playbook at them and deciding what we can feature and maybe some things we can put in the background and work on next spring.

"I will say this, there is a good vibe. There is good energy with the offensive unit. They're coming to work every day and they're getting better. It's exciting to be here right now on the offensive side."

On the second night of a back-to-back – with first place in the Eastern Conference already wrapped up – the Toronto Raptors easily could have packed it in after falling behind by 17 points.

That’s not what coach Dwane Casey wanted.

”We are taking these last games seriously Marshall Newhouse Color Rush Jersey , because now isn’t the time to let any bad habits into our game,” Casey said. ”This week is about sharpening your habits to be ready for next week.”

Jonas Valanciunas scored 25 points, and the Raptors rallied for a 108-98 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Monday night. Toronto closed the second quarter on a 21-7 run, and the Raptors also scored the first 13 points of the fourth.

Detroit was without injured stars Andre Drummond and Blake Griffin for its home finale, but the Pistons still led 53-36 in the first half. But it was 60-57 at halftime, and Detroit managed only 38 points over the final two quarters.

”I think we competed hard,” said Eric Moreland, who started at center in place of Drummond. ”I think we competed on both ends tonight.”

The short-handed Pistons are out of playoff contention, and Toronto had some key players out too in Fred VanVleet and Serge Ibaka. Although the result meant little, it was a tight, entertaining game through three quarters. The Raptors led 85-80 at the end of the third before breaking it open.

Toronto led 100-81 in the fourth, then Detroit went on a 14-2 run. Pistons rookie Luke Kennard took a 3-pointer that would have cut the deficit to four, but it rattled out.

Valanciunas didn’t play at all in the fourth, but he’d done plenty already. He finished 11 of 13 from the field and made his only attempt from beyond the arc.

HELD OUT

In addition to Drummond (sore Achilles tendon) and Griffin (right ankle contusion), the Pistons were also without Reggie Bullock (left knee swelling).

VanVleet was out with lower back tightness, and Ibaka had the night off to rest for Toronto.

LOOKING AHEAD

The game didn’t mean much in terms of seeding in the East Falcons Game Jerseys , but Toronto (59-22) now leads Golden State (58-23) by a game for home-court advantage in a possible NBA Finals matchup.

The Raptors are also hoping to win their regular-season finale at Miami and reach 60 victories.

”We want sixty, because we know it would be a great achievement for our franchise,” said guard Kyle Lowry, who scored 11 points Monday. ”The important thing, though, is what happens after the Miami game. We’re ready. It doesn’t matter who we play. We just have to play our game.”

HANDICAPPING

Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy shared his thoughts on Toronto’s chances in the East.

”I’ve said for a long time, I think they’re the best team in the East, and the team to beat,” Van Gundy said. ”So, we’ll see what happens, but that’s a really, really good team.”
