EFM Exclusive Interview with Twins in Mind
2 Dec 2012
Twins in Mind started in 2008 when Ioannis and Adriaan met each other on the Enigma Forum. Twins in Mind: the name says it all, people with the same mind, same feelings and thoughts, although all members of TIM (twins in mind) have a different cultural background.
In 2009 Twins in Mind met Don Longton, a Canadian talent and asked Don to be part of TIM.
He made the amazing song Timeless Moments which shows his ability to print his own stamp on TIM.
Entranced.FM is proud to have this interview with Ioannis (John) and Adriaan. The members of this radiostation were able to post their questions in a forum thread. The questions we collected and sent to Twins in Mind.

Since you are all living in another part of the world, is this making an album more difficult?
Due of technical progress with internet and such, its becoming easier then ever to be far away but still being close. Also the fact that everyone can develop his own ideas first before one of the other have a go on it, makes it easier. The only thing that took some time was to synchronise the equipment and software to be able to easily swap files.
You are also doing some other projects beside Twins In Mind. Can you combine this easily?
Yes, of course it takes always time to adapt to another genre and dive into the athmosphere. Though Manu Riga is in many ways similar to what we do with Twins in Mind.

1. Why do you choose to play ChillOut? - There you go, thank you, I'll take my prize now.
It wasn't a matter of choice but a matter of following our heart. This brought us together and also what we grew up with. Independed of eachother we loved Chillout/ambient already and the feeling of being able to share it with people who understand you is amazing. So its a natural development to create chillout.
2. Are you satisfied with the work of your executive producer?
Yes, we are grateful to all the people who support Twins in Mind in any way. its always been a joy to see people want to invest time and money in our project.

3 . How do you find inspiration for new songs?
Sometimes inspiration is something that comes natural, sometimes you need to look for it. It can be triggered by a vocal sample of a traditional tribe, the sound of the wind , Emotions of things we are going through in our daily lives. Sometimes its by doodling with a synthesizer.
4. How long does it take to complete a new song?
Hard to answer: Sometimes it takes one or two days, sometimes it takes a year. If we feel that we can't make a great idea working immediate we leave it for a while. for Sad in Joy it took almost three years to go from single ideas to a full album. ;) For the next album it should go faster

5. Who or what do you consider the biggest influence on your music?
Its probably unnecessary to mention Enigma as a big influence on the start of Twins in Mind and the creation of Sad in Joy. But over the years we are drifting away of that influence, because the more we tried to sound like Enigma the more we discovered our own style and now we start to avoid any direct reference to Enigma. I really think that Mystery and Ethnic diversity is what inspire us the most.
6. Are there changes you would like to make for future albums? If so, what are they?
Partially of this answer is laying in the previous one: The next album will also be a little darker and have a little more uptempo moments. Maybe it will also be more a grown up version of the first album. Although we will not drift away completely from the original idea behind Twins in Mind. We will work for sure more with Singers and instrumentalist from all over the world.
7. What are your favorite musical memories?
The way music brought me and John initially together. For me (Adriaan) its also the day my father gave me my first CD of Vangelis and I will never forget the moment I heard Enigma's Sadeness in 1990 it changed my life.
Later many moments, my first release, our first movie score, our first album together... this actual moment where John is next to me.
(John) I will use a quote "There are no ordinary moments" (Dan Millman), I think as a Twins in Mind Adriaan said it all. As a classical educated musician I went to many Degrees that were essential for me as a musician, but even more I appreciate every moment, song and time we spend (t) as Twins.
8. Has your family influenced your musical development? If so, how?
(Adriaan) When I was a kid my grandparents supported me in developing myself as a musician, from the moment I took a recorder flute till the day I got my first synthesizer. Now as a married man with a kid, I take for sure some things into my inspiration. Although mostly its my music that influence my family life ;)
(John) I am very grateful to my family because since I was a kid they supported me to develop my musical skills, both in financial way as helping me to pursue my dream.
9. Do you teach music, or would you consider teaching in the future?
(Adriaan) I help people to develop their synth skills and producer skills, I am not a big player so I would be a bad choice as a teacher.
(John) I am actually a teacher in Classical Music both in the Accordeon and in musical theory. Though I still learn every day myself. Musical education takes more then a lifetime, so you keep learning till your dying day.
10. Where did the name "Twins In Mind" originate?
Oh that was a very easy one: due of our close friendship relation and constantly having the same thoughts and ideas, we felt like real Twins. It is almost telepathic, a mysterious connection. Later when Don joined TIM we felt like a third Twin showed up.
11. Do you prefer to compose to an album theme?
Yes we do, but it is not always clear what the theme will be, it grows gradually, we don't sit down before starting an album and say "this is the theme". This could kill inspiration.
12. What is the best thing for you about performing live?
As the music for Twins in Mind is technically too hard to perform live, we didn't came to it YET. Maybe after the next album: because it will take at least a year to find the right musicians and logistic will be a nightmare too. Because we work with people from all over the world, This would be a very expensive thing to do.
Max - Couple of easy ones
13. Tell us a funny story?
One of the funny things happened to us was when we met the first time. I took John to his first attraction park. He had never been in a looping rollercoster, so I convinced him to go with me. On that particular one I had never been myself and I told John that we would be dragged slowly to the top to be released there. What we both didn't know was that it used a magnetic launching system, which reaches its top speed under a second.... Needless to say that both him as I were shocked.. because I didn't expect it and he was told otherwise by me. Twins in Shock!
14 . What advice do you have for an upcoming producer?
Try to limit yourself to a limited amount of synthesizers or plugins, less is more. Secondly do not use compressors for the sake of it, I hear many demos of people that are overly loud and compressed. When I ask why they mostly answer "I read in a magazine you need to use compressors". Third and most important: don't try to copy your idols, stay original but you can be influenced.

15. Have you ever written down lyrics/music on a bar napkin??
(John) hehe, no... I use pizzaboxes :D
(Adriaan) no, because I wouldn't be able to read my own handwritting afterwards , I use my iPad.
da1e
16. In your type of music, did you feel it was rather difficult to make a name?
Yes and no, as we never started the project to make a name out of it. We only wanted to share what we loved ourselfs. But it was amazing supportive to get questions all the time such as "when will TIM album come out, I want it now" from all over the world. It was not the Quantity but the Quality of the support we got. Although its great to see that Twins in Mind is getting a name out there.
17. How many groupies ask you if you are really twins?
The question would be easier if you asked us "who did not ask...", yes all the time ;) Yesterday even our new singer Sheyenne Rivers (Blue stone "worlds apart") asked us this question :p
18. What is the most difficult aspect of producing/writing your own music?
To be faithfull to our own ideas. To finish songs when we get stucked on it. When you compose music there are many traps to watch out for.
petshopboy
19. On the Beatles album Abbey Road in the end they say "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make". Is that true?
It's great to see that people write amazing things about our music we make out of love, the love we get from fans is surpassing everything. A fan ever told me "Eternal Fantasy is like a 5 minutes orgasm to me" ;) this says it all :D
