Sander van Doorn is a badass – he was ranked #12 last year on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll and is known for being always appreciative of his fans. While the Dutch artist is widely associated with trance, he’s been proving over and over that his music and sound can be – and is – more versatile. Eleve11 is no exception. It is a thoughtful, strong, and balanced album: there is a steady equilibrium throughout between vocal and instrumental tracks; trance, house, techno, and electro; and buildups and breakdowns.
The album kicks off with “Love Is Darkness” featuring Carol Lee. Enough said. Released in early 2011, this song is huge. “Love Is Darkness” is a trance anthem, and its power is indicative of where Sander wants to go with the rest of the album. It’s also probably a large part of the reason the release of Eleve11 has been so highly anticipated. SVD follows up with “Koko,” another already-released single. While there’s no denying that this is a great progressive track – with a whistle that gets stuck in your head – part of me wishes that the song following “Love Is Darkness” would have been something we’d never heard before. Either way, a solid start.
