As a long time Linux user, I have to disagree with your advice for that OS. My advice is:
Mplayer: If you don't need all the fancy clicky-buttons and scrolling titles and such, go with a nice simple command line.
Audacious2: If you're looking for the "Winamp of Linux" this is your choice. It even can use Winamp2 skins, if you're so inclined.
Rythmbox: This is an iTunes style player for Gnome. There's also a KDE player, but I can't think of the name at the moment.

Also, if you're in a situation where you can't install any software, like at work, you can still likely run VLC by visiting here:
http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable
(You can also run Firefox and many other programs under Windows the same way. Just don't blame me if you violate a company policy and get fired.)
